Now For Something Completely Different
I've enjoyed working with, and for, the Eclipse community, but for a variety of reasons, I'm resigning my position with the Eclipse Foundation as of April 30th. I'm a big supporter of Eclipse and I see an ever greater future ahead for Eclipse. And yet it has become clear over the last year that the focus of the Foundation has changed to the point where there is no longer a significant role for me.1
I'm leaving my remaining duties in the hands of competent people: Wayne has already taken over the Technology PMC lead; Martin is already the Architecture Council chair; David is already the Planning Council chair; Gabe is supporting the download wizard, the common build system, and the Galileo project management; Karl is the expert on the portal as well as being one of Denis' crack team of webmasters; and Anne is the go-to person on EclipseCon and Eclipse Summit Europe.
The software world is at an inflection point. There are many ways forward. I trust that as a community, you will collectively determine the best path, and that Eclipse will continue to provide the best Java IDE, the best IDE framework, and the best Java run-time framework available, open or closed source. As I said before, there are many great people involved in Eclipse and I have faith that through collective action you will excel.
I wish you much success in the future and I hope that our paths cross again.
(Who knows, perhaps I'll even run for a committer rep Board seat next year!)
1 I have too much respect for the Eclipse community to continue to draw a salary when there's no role for me, hence my decision to do something different. This allows Mike to reallocate those funds to something more in line with the current focus of the Foundation.

The best of luck with your new endeavours!
Thanks for the hard work you've been putting into Eclipse and help making it a success.
Bjorn, many thanks for all work you have done and energy you have brought to play. We'll miss The Knuckles too.
Thanks for all the great work you did for the Community. Good luck!
Best of luck on your new path.
It's terribly sad to see you go. Many thanks for your enormous contributions to the committer community, and thanks especially for mentoring me while I got my project off the ground. You've inspired me to mentor others, and I will miss working with you.
Thanks for all the time you put into Eclipse and growing the community.
Good luck!
Bjorn, the Eclipse community owes you a great deal. Your enthusiasm, energy, and diverse interests have inspired me. Good luck with whatever you decide to do. I look forward to hearing about your exploits :)
I'm glad we got a chance to meet at EclipseCon this year before you chose to step down. Thanks for everything you've done for the community and good luck!
Eclipse won't be the same without you, so don't land too far :).
Either way, keep in touch.
Bjorn,
thanks for everything you've done for the Eclipse community. You've done an awesome job and we'll miss you. Good luck with your next endeavor!
The best of luck to you, Bjorn! Your pragmatism and wealth of experience will surely be missed, particularly by the many people tasked to fill your shoes. ;)
Bjorn, I really like they way you question implicit assumptions and look at things from different perspectives. I hope this was not the reason you resigned from eclipse, because I think the eclipse community and the foundation needs people like you (who think out of the box) to be successful in the future.
Best wishes for the future and continue challenging the world ;-)
Michael
Thank you for all the good work towards making Eclipse a great community. Best of luck for what comes next!
Thanks for the best wishes. @Michael - unfortunately, yes, your reading between the lines is correct.
Good luck in the future Bjorn! Thanks for the tremendous amount of work you put into the foundation and the community.
Thanks for everything you've for Eclipse!
Does this mean *both* Bjorns [1, 2] will no longer be maintaining this blog, or will you leave your clone in place to keep up the much-needed out-of-box boat-rockin'? :P
Best of luck in the future Bjorn. Wherever you go, I hope you don't travel too far from the Eclipse Community.
Actually, it appears that I am the only one to say: "Why not stay and change Eclipse, because change is really needed, here." Reminiscent of: "When they came for me, there was no one left to speak out for me."
Can't wait to see what you do next, Bjorn. Do you have a blog I can continue to follow you at?
Dann, I tried. I tried and tried. I would not be leaving if I believed that more trying would lead to success.
Time to set up your own blog, eh?
Best of luck, you'll be successful wherever you land!

(yes, that was an airplane pun!)
Bjorn,
Your have been instrumental in shaping multiple technologies and communities that I have worked with. I hope and expect that trend to continue, and am deeply saddened that the outlet for your skills and creativity will no longer be the Eclipse Foundation.
Six years ago I became convinced that Eclipse was the software platform for innovation, and over the following years I have had the pleasure of watching you forge the development process and community that could support that. I don't know how we could have had a small and new idea like Mylyn grow within Eclipse without your efforts around enabling innovation. You have now pointed out some cracks in the foundation of our ecosystem which we cannot ignore. I still have high hopes for the Eclipse technology and ecosystem, and will continue to carefully consider how to act on the advice that you have presented, and hope that others do so as well. As you have pointed out, sitting back and hoping for the best is not a viable option.
Mik
Bjorn, It is sad to see you go.
There are a lot of member companies like ours that begin to see that we need to get more commercial value out of our membership. The message of your ideas now starts to sink in, at least with me.
No longer can member companies contribute their dues without asking what the ROI is and we should act upon that by delivering it.
I strongly believe you will see some follow up on your recent blog postings. I hope you will still support this with your ideas.
